Professor Ian Wilkinson

Hard-to-control blood pressureHigh blood pressure in younger adultsHigh blood pressure in pregnancyLess-common causes of high blood pressure
Ian has spent more than 30 years helping people with high blood pressure — particularly when it’s been hard to control, when it appears at a young age, or when something less obvious is driving it. He currently leads the British and Irish Hypertension Society and helped write the national guidelines that GPs and specialists across the UK use today. Patients tell us they appreciate that he explains things clearly, takes time to listen, and never makes them feel rushed.
Qualifications & roles

Professor of Therapeutics, University of Cambridge · Honorary Consultant Physician at Cambridge University Hospitals · President of the British and Irish Hypertension Society · Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (London & Edinburgh) · Trained at Oxford and Edinburgh.

Research & academic profile

Ian has an internationally recognised research profile in hypertension, with high-impact publications in journals including The Lancet, JAMA, Circulation, the European Heart Journal and Hypertension. His work has shaped how blood pressure is measured, how arterial stiffness is understood as a marker of cardiovascular risk, and how newer treatments for resistant and young-onset hypertension are evaluated. He has co-authored UK and European hypertension guidelines and continues to lead clinical trials at the Cambridge Clinical Research Centre — meaning patients here are seen by someone helping to write tomorrow’s standard of care.
